Piano Spheres presents The Keys: Volume I – Extended Piano Techniques with HOCKET
Vicki Ray plays Pierre Jodlowski’s Série Bleue
Performed by Vicki Ray on the Piano Spheres series, April 3, 2018. Pierre Jodlowski is a French musician working in different artistic fields: musical composition, improvisation, performances, and sound installations.
Piano Spheres presents Paul Cornish – “Unconditional Love” (Geri Allen)
"Unconditional Love" is a composition by the late great jazz pianist and composer Geri Allen. Geri Allen is one of my favorite pianists, and she has influenced many of the great jazz pianists today. Given that the compositions and legacies of female composers are rarely performed and mentioned in classrooms, I feel the onus to use the opportunities and platforms I am afforded to perform their works and uphold their legacies, especially women of color.
Andrew Anderson plays Matt Sargent’s Songs, clouds
world premiere, PianoSpheres commission. Songs, clouds is a piece for solo piano and electronics. The score builds uniquely (following different winding paths) during each performance.
Gloria Cheng plays Ge Gan-ru’s Gong from Ancient Music
Ge Gan-ru, described in The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians as ‘China’s first avant-garde composer’, is regarded as one of the most original composers of his generation. His music is known for its immediately identifiable individualism and unique sound.
HOCKET plays Aaron Holloway Nahum’s “I Slow Down”
Composed during the 2020 COVID Lockdown, this piece translates the first wave of COVID deaths in Minnesota – where my father, brother and sister all work as physicians – into a musical form. The piece has an optional video element, with spoken text and photography of doctors behind their newly required masks.
