David Kaplan – Ph(f)antasy(ies)
May 24, 2022 @ 8:00 pm
Musical exchange and fantasy form are the inspirations for a program of preludes, fantasies, and other short works by seven composers spanning half a millennium. Two new commissions by Anthony Cheung and Christopher Cerrone fantasize on one another’s musical ideas, and Schumann is the inspiration for Augusta Read Thomas’ Morse Code Fantasy and Elliott Carter’s seminal Night Fantasies, introduced by an “unmeasured” prelude by Louis Couperin and a miniature by Gyorgy Ligeti. Like a beating heart, Schumann’s Fantasiestück, Op. 12 is nestled in the middle of the recital.
Program: Louis Couperin – Unmeasured Prelude in F
Anthony Cheung – Holding Patterns (Los Angeles Premiere)
Gyorgy Ligeti – Musica Ricercata no. 1
Christopher Cerrone – Passagework (Los Angeles Premiere)
Robert Schumann – Fantasiestücke, Op. 12
Augusta Read Thomas – Morse Code Fantasy
Elliott Carter – Night Fantasies
